Centennial Campaign

Embracing the Dream: The Second Century Campaign for Wayland Baptist University is a three-year campaign aimed at raising funds for several projects on the Plainview campus, with a total goal of $14 million. . In addition, a $6 million campaign is underway for an additional classroom building on the San Antonio campus.

Flores Bible Building

1. Religion Building and Mission Center: Built in 1959, the Flores Bible Building is in need of expansion and renovation. Though structurally sound, the building can no longer accommodate growing classes and faculty. In addition, the new Missions Center needs a home to call its own. The project will include:

  • Eight classrooms with capacity for 30
  • Lecture hall with capacity for 80-90
  • Missions Center offices and workroom
  • Chapel with capacity for 300-350
  • Conference Room, two seminar rooms
  • Faculty and staff office suite with lobby, lounge
  • Interactive TV equipment in one classroom, wireless capability in entire building, basic technology in classrooms, chapel and lecture hall
  • Student lounge
  • Computer language laboratory

2. Renovations to Harral Auditorium: Harral Memorial Auditorium has served the needs of Wayland and the greater Plainview area since 1968 as one of the larger such venues in the city. The facility is in need of refreshing and updated technology to make it an even better space for all users. That includes:

  • Repaired seating
  • Upgraded sound system with new sound board
  • Addition of second spotlight
  • Installation of new lighting circuits above the audience seating
  • Upgraded lighting system, converting to“intelligent” lighting instruments for more versatility

3. Campus Enhancements: Several areas on the Plainview campus are in need of updating, technology upgrades and other improvements. Additional space is also needed for offices and classrooms using unfinished space. Projects include:

  • Instructional technology in most classrooms, including projector, digital presenter and instructor station, computer with DVD
  • Interactive technology equipment and connectivity for external campuses to allow courses and videoconferences to be held
  • Percussion equipment for band program
  • Completion of unfinished underground space at Mabee Learning Resources Center into office, classroom space
  • Improvements to heating/air conditioning systems, sewer; renovation to restrooms in select buildings on the Plainview campus

4. Expansion of Fine Arts Area: A dated, well-worn facility, coupled with a program that continues to grow in enrollment and offerings,
presents double issues for the fine arts program. The program needs more room if it is to continue to grow and attract students.

  • Upgrade of instrumental rehearsal hall
  • Renovate current recital hall into opera/musical theatre workshop area
  • Addition of new recital hall with seating for 500
  • Addition of outdoor pavilion/amphitheatre
  • Labs for music technology/keyboards, recording lab with audio/video capability
  • Addition of classrooms, faculty offices, lounge areas, student locker facility
  • Addition of laboratory theatre
  • Replace stage floor in Black Box Theatre

5. Building Our Endowment: A strong endowment is vital for a university to operate into the future. Endowment funds are permanently invested and managed by financial professionals. A portion of the investment returns is used annually to provide scholarships as well as program and academic support. This means the university is able to help students who are genuinely in need and also continue programs vital to Wayland’s success for generations to come.

  • Endowment for a Christian Leadership Program - Funds would provide for programming and activities focusing on building leadership skills
    for students.
  • Endowed Academic Chairs - Such positions enable the university to recruit and retain high quality faculty.
  • Endowed Professorships and Lectureships - Funds provide for distinguished guest lecturers and professors who enhance learning opportunities for students and faculty.
  • Endowed Scholarships - With increasing costs and competition for students, scholarships make education accessible for many and narrow the gap between public and private education costs.

6. Annual Fund: Annual fund dollars are undesignated, meaning that they are added to the general fund to be used at the university’s discretion. Though many donors prefer to direct their funds to certain projects, these dollars are greatly needed as well to offset the high cost of running a university and the needs that entails. Some of those needs include:

  • Unexpected repairs or renovations to buildings, including student residence halls
  • Technology upgrades, computer rotations as necessary
  • University-funded scholarships such as the Pioneer Scholarship and our portion of the United Way PEP program providing dollars for    first-year students from Plainview schools
