Centennial
centennial service opportunities

With a heritage of service to community and beyond, Wayland has chosen to integrate several major service efforts into the Centennial Celebration. Opportunities abound for alumni near and far as well as community residents and friends of the university to join our students and employees as we make a difference during this year and celebrate God’s goodness to us by giving back to others. Here are the three major efforts:

* Degree of Difference Day: Oct. 11, 2008

In its third year, Degree of Difference Day pairs groups of students and employees with service projects around the Plainview community. In the past, groups have painted at various agencies and churches, done minor repair work and cleanup jobs and ministered at nursing homes and other locations.

Our external campuses are encouraged to pick a project of their own for the Degree of Difference Day, making an impact in their own communities. Their projects will be listed here for alumni in those areas who may wish to join in the service effort.

For this centennial DOD, we also hope to involve various WBU alumni all over the world in service to their own communities, making literally a worldwide impact on this singular day in history. What better way to say thanks to those who have supported us than to give back to others!

Alumni projects will be listed on this site by city and with the contact person for the project. If you want to head a project in your area, just email Teresa Young and we will load your information on the site so others in your city can contact you directly to join the fun.

* Habitat for Humanity Project: Oct. 8-11, 2008

In partnership with First Baptist Church of Plainview, Wayland students and employees and FBC members will join hands to build a Habitat home for a Plainview family. The worksite will be on campus, providing easy access for students to work around the clock for three straight days. The home will then be moved to the Habitat neighborhood off 28th and Joliet for the finishing work.

Alumni, community partners and other friends are welcome to join the effort, and sign-ups will be available soon for work sessions at the Habitat site. Watch this Web page for more details.

* WBU Week of Service: March 16-20, 2009

Celebrated during the Spring Break week at Wayland, the Week of Service will be an opportunity for student groups on campus to participate in service projects around the area and beyond. The hope is that alumni and students at other campuses will also celebrate the week by serving in their communities. Think of it as Degree of Difference Day on steroids!

Projects do not have to be a week long, though students typically spend the entire week on mission. Pick one project even for one hour or one day during the week and represent your alma mater by giving back!

Watch this site for details on planned projects. If you have a project in mind you can either organize or participate in, email Teresa Young and we will load your information online so others can network with you. What better use of the Wayland family than to serve together!
