EDLI 3300. Teaching Writing in the Elementary and Middle School - students will learn
about the nature of the writing process, how to utilize strategies and develop activities appropriate to teach good writing to elementary and middle school students, and how to teach the conventions of writing. Prerequisites: EDUC 3302.


EDLI 3307. Literature Based Approaches to Teaching Reading
- Knowledge of narrative
and expository children's books and how they are used to develop comprehension and fluency in reading. Emphasis is placed on commercially prepared reading systems that utilize literature as the basis for teaching reading.

EDLI 3308. Early Literacy and Phonics - Develops an understanding of how all areas in language arts emerge in early childhood and how various instructional approaches nurture such development. Field based component is an integral part of the course. Prerequisite: EDUC 3302 or consent of instructor.

EDLI 3310. Content Area Literacy in Elementary and Middle School - Emphasis is placed
on expository materials and strategies for developing content area literacy in the elementary and middle school grades. Prerequisite: EDUC 3302 or consent of instructor.

EDLI 4300. Diagnosis and Investigation of Literacy Difficulties - in-depth analysis of factors, evaluations and assessments to identify elementary students who are challenged in literacy development. Research-tested interventions and strategies will occur during the course lab time. Field experience: 6 hours. Prerequisite: EDLI 3308.

EDLI 4325. Developing Reading, Study, and Thinking Skills at the Secondary Level -
instructional approaches that integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening to enhance acquisition of secondary-level subject matter, thinking, and study skills. Integration of the ELP's (English Language Proficiencies) into the content areas and development of proficiencies in teaching

EDLI 4347. Teaching Language Arts in the Elementary and Middle School - interactive,
integrative approach to teaching the language arts and writing process approach with applications made to elementary and middle schools. Integration of the ELP's (English Language Proficiencies) into the content areas and development of proficiencies in teaching the ELP's. Field experience: 6 hours. Prerequisite: EDUC 3302.

EDLI 4328. Language Acquisition - examines the process of learning and using a second
language focusing on the relationship between language and literacy acquisition of English laguage learners. Theories and models of second language acquisition (SLA). Emotional, social and intellectual implications of the process of learning a second language while maintaining the first. Analyze and compare first and second language acquisition and apply strategies related to second learning in a cross-cultural setting. Prerequisite: EDLI 4345

EDLI 4348. Literacy Processes of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations - provides research and trends in teaching school language learners. The legal aspects, instructional design, behavioral principles, and real world challenges of second language learning and teaching. Best instructional practices for students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Various theories/approaches of language acquisition are investigated including the Structured English Instruction approach. Prerequisite: EDLI 3308.

EDSP 4349. Teaching Students with Mild to Moderate Incidence Disabilities - teaching
Students with High Incidence Disabilities provides a comprehensive and engaging overview of characteristics, assessment and current issues related to the education of students with high incidence disabilities. This course will provide well researched and up to date information on learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, mild mental retardation as well as other high incidence disabilities within applied educational settings. Prerequisite: EDSP 2304

EDSP 4350. Teaching Students with High Incidence Disabilities - Teaching Students with
High Incidence Disabilities provides a comprehensive and engaging overview of characteristics, assessment and current issues related to the education of students with high incidence disabilities. This course will provide well researched and up to date information on learning disabilities, behavioral disorders, mild mental retardation as well as other high incidence disabilities within applied educational settings. Prerequisite: EDSP 2304


EDLI 5306. Literacy Assessment and Instruction - Students will administer and interpret
varied assessment tools as well as select and implement appropriate instruction techniques to plan and conduct effective literacy instruction for a culturally diverse population. Prerequisite: EDLI 5354.

EDLI 5307. Foundations of Reading Through Literature Based Approaches
-Exploration
of reading journals, literature circles, author studies, thematic units, etc. Basic familiarity with genres of children's literature is assumed. Emphasis is placed on the use of children’s literature as a basis for reading comprehension. Specific literature based reading programs are investigated and explored. Involvement with children during the course is required.

EDLI 5309. Young Adult Literature (ENGL 5309)
- Focus is literature for the middle and
high school student. Emphasis is placed on contemporary literary and non-literary selections.

EDLI 5324. Content Area Instruction -
teachers will learn to determine pupil needs and abilities in content area. Uses all language arts as a tool for learning informational texts.
Prerequisite: EDLI 5347 or consent of instructor.

EDLI 5325. Developing Reading, Study, and Thinking Skills at the Secondary Level -
Ways to integrate language areas and thinking skills within secondary level courses, leading to improved knowledge acquisition and lifelong learning. Prerequisite: EDUC 5305 or consent of instructor.

EDLI 5328. Second Language Acquisition -
explore theories and models of second language acquisition (SLA). Learn about the emotional, social, and intellectual implications of the process of learning a second language while maintaining the first. Analyze and compare first and second language acquisition. Apply strategies related to second language learning in a cross cultural setting.

EDLI 5345. Teaching English as a Second Language (ENGL 5345) - methods of teaching
ESL for bilingual and ESL teachers. Instructional strategies for transitioning to English and mainstreaming second language English-speakers. An emphasis on developing instructional procedures for teaching reading and writing, and developing oral language. Content/subject sheltered instructional techniques. Analyzing strategies for assisting speakers of other languages to become English proficient.

EDLI 5347. Language Arts/Writing Process
- analysis of the strategies to teach the language arts and writing process approach EC-6 with applications made to 7-12. Development of instructional strategies to incorporate the ELP's (English Language Proficiencies) standards into the content area. Field experience: 6 hours.

EDLI 5354. Elementary Literacy and Phonics Instruction - An examination of the continuing development of all aspects of literacy in early childhood; theoretical underpinnings and instructional approaches are covered.
