Math Class at Wayland

MATHEMATICS

"The chief aim of all investigations of the external world should be to discover the rational order and harmony which has been imposed on it by God and which He revealed to us in the language of mathematics."

Johannes Kepler

Mission Statement:

The Wayland Baptist University mathematics department seeks to promote a mathematical mindset in a distinctively Christian environment. We provide a program of foundational mathematics for all undergraduate students as well as special programs for mathematics majors.

Welcome:

Thank you for visiting the website for the Mathematics Department at Wayland Baptist University.

Both the content and the method of mathematics are important for meeting the needs of the world as well as the development of the individual. As a tool of the sciences, mathematics is indispensable, while as an art, it challenges the ability and appreciation of the best minds. The mathematics department seeks to do three basic things: teach fundamental mathematical concepts, show how mathematics can be applied to the real world, and investigate the nature of the mathematical process itself.

Placement:

The School of Mathematics and Sciences places students in mathematics courses according to their high school record and ACT (American College Testing) program examination in mathematics as follows:

  1. ACAC 0315 and ACAC 0316, Computational Mathematics, are for students with ACT scores in mathematics lower than 16.
  2. MATH 1300, Intermediate Algebra, is for students with ACT scores in mathematics of 16 through 19. Students who failed MATH 1300 must enroll in ACAC 0315 or ACAC 0316 unless the instructor approves re-enrollment in MATH 1300.
  3. MATH 1304, College Algebra, is for students who do not qualify for calculus or trigonometry, but who have had two years of algebra and one of geometry in high school, or who have had two of three courses with a grade of "B" or above. Students start here unless there is a reason for placing them above or below this level.
  4. MATH 1305, Trigonometry, is for students who plan to major or minor in mathematics or science and who have not had trigonometry in high school.
Prerequisites: High school plane geometry and either two years of high school algebra or MATH 1304.
  5. MATH 1306, Elementary Statistics, is for students who have had MATH 1304 or above. It is a requirement for all mathematics and sciences school majors and minors.
  6. MATH 2306, Calculus I, is for students with ACT scores in mathematics of 26 or above and who have had trigonometry and are interested in more mathematics courses.

Degree Programs:

A major in mathematics and a major in mathematics for secondary certification are offered. In addition, there are a minor in mathematics and a pre-engineering cooperative program with Texas Tech University. The degree requirements for the math programs are listed here.
