Dr. Dorothy McCoy Endowed Scholarship

Dr. Dorothy McCoy

Dr. Dorothy McCoy received the Ph.D. in Mathematics from State University of Iowa in 1929 after earning the B.A. from Baylor University in 1925 and the M.S. in 1927. She taught mathematics in Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi before she came to Wayland Baptist College in 1949, the same year Wayland became a senior college. For most of her twenty-six years at Wayland she served as Chairman of the division of Mathematics and Sciences. During her years at Wayland, Dr. McCoy traveled extensively to all corners of the world. She was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach in Baghdad in 1953 and also spent several summers working at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Cape Kennedy.

Upon her retirement in 1975, Dr. McCoy was honored as the Distinguished Professor Emeritus by the Board of Trustees at Wayland. Other honors include the McCoy Lecture Series in 1980; the Wayland Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service to Students Award in 1982; the Roy McClung Service Award for her concern for foreign students; the Emeritus Alumni Award in 1999; and in 2001 the Wayland trustees voted to name a dormitory in her honor.

After retirement she traveled to Indonesia and Africa and taught mathematics to missionary children. Dr. McCoy had a great love for Wayland students and chose to designate funds from her estate to endow scholarships for students majoring in mathematics at Wayland Baptist University.
