History Requirements

The following courses (36 hours) are required for teacher certification:
HIST 1303 – World Civilization to 1500
HIST 1304 – World Civilization Since 1500
*HIST 2301 – United States History to 1877
*HIST 2302 – United States History Since 1877
HIST 3301 – Historical Methods and Philosophy
HIST 3303 – Texas History
HIST 3309 – History of the 20th Century World
HIST 4305 – Recent America
Three hours from any upper level U.S. history course
Three hours from any upper level non-U.S. history course
Three hours from any upper level non-Western history course
Three hours upper level history course

* Six hours are included in the general education core curriculum

Professional Education – High School Teacher Certification
In addition to the general education core and preparation in the teaching field, all high school certification programs require a professional education sequence. The professional education sequence provides students with knowledge of the learner, the teaching-learning process, effective teaching strategies, classroom management strategies, and reading in the various content areas. It also provides a structured program of field experiences beginning with classroom observation and ending with student teaching. Students must have taken and passed the basic skills test upon completion of EDUC 3301 – Principles and Practices in Education and before taking further professional education courses.
