Welcome to a new century! 100 years ago, the State of Texas chartered the Wayland Literary and Technical Institute. Over the years, the name has changed but the mission has remained the same. The seal of the university reads, “Go into all the world . . . let there be light.” Little did Dr. and Mrs. James Henry Wayland conceive that a glimmer of faith, represented by their $10,000 and 25 acres of land, would one day explode into a floodlight of hope for many seeking higher education and a better life. Through its many campuses and online program, Wayland literally reaches around the world as it shines forth the light of knowledge and the gospel.
As part of the Wayland family, you share in a unique heritage. Wayland stands as the oldest institution of higher education on the High Plains of Texas, thanks to God and the faith of the administration, faculty, and staff, who served without pay when the school’s bank failed during the Great Depression. Three years before the Supreme Court banned segregation, Wayland became the first four-year liberal arts college in the former Confederate states to voluntarily integrate. For decades, the Flying Queens basketball team has been the mark of excellence, with its record for most wins by any women’s collegiate program. In 1972, Wayland opened programs for non-traditional and military students, expanding over the years to thirteen external campuses in six states and Kenya. Today, Wayland is the fourth-largest Southern Baptist university, graduating 14% of Air Force members earning a baccalaureate degree.
Wayland—a century of service, integrity, excellence, vision!
