POST-BACCALAUREATE TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
WBU Amarillo offers courses towards teacher certification at the secondary level with all courses being taught in the evenings. Post-baccalaureate students can choose between two tracks towards certification.
Probationary Track
Within one year of employment with a school district, candidates must complete all of the basic requirements in the post-baccalaureate program. Students should make application for a Probation Plan through WBU's Amarillo Campus. The Probation Plan will be sent to the employing school district (where applicable). The Probation Plan lists all requirements for teacher certification. See requirements below.
Deficiency Plan Track
The Deficiency Track is designed to take three years. All work must be completed within these three years. Candidates are required to take at least 6 hours of courses every year in order to meet this time limit. Candidates should make application for Deficiency Plan through the Amarillo Campus. The Deficiency Plan is sent to the employing school district (where applicable). The Deficiency Plan lists all necessary requirements for teacher certification. See requirements below.
Post-Baccalaureate Requirements
This program is designed for the post-baccalaureate candidate who has completed a bachelor's degree with a 2.7 GPA or better. The basic requirements are as follows:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Overall GPA of at least 2.7 (out of 4.0) with at least 2.7 in each teaching field and all education courses.
- Score of 230 or higher on Texas Academic Skills Program. Some exemptions exist.
- Demonstration of skills in educational computing and technology through successful completion of COSC 1300/EDUC2310 or proficiency test.
- Demonstration of speech competency (with emphasis on oral proficiency in the English language) through either successful completion of SPCH 1301 or proficiency review.
- Secondary certification: completion of a single Teaching Field, which is offered at Wayland, plus RDNG 5325. : Each secondary teacher must have one or more teaching fields. A teaching field is defined as at least 24 semester hours in the subject to be taught, 12 of which are upper-level.
- Course work in teaching field, subject concentration, or professional development must include at least 6 hours taken during the last 6 years. The academic advisor or school dean may require additional work.
- Completion of Professional Development education. These courses are designed to give the participant basic understanding of the history, foundation and other background of the profession. The courses are: EDUC 5303, EDUC 5304, EDUC 5305 and EDUC 5306.
- Student Teaching
- Satisfactory passing of the appropriate Examination for Certification of Educators in Texas (SBEC).
Exemptions From The TASP Requirement:
400 on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) in Verbal exempts from Reading and Writing
400 on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) in Quantitative exempts from Math
"B" or better in Engl. 1301 & 1302 exempts from Writing
"B" or better in Engl. 2301 & 2303 or Engl. 2302 & 2303 exempts from Reading
"B" or better in History 2301 & 2302 exempts from Reading
"B" or better in College Algebra, Math 1304 exempts from Math
