The Pioneer basketball team split their home series last week with a loss against the University of Science & Art of Oklahoma, 63-66, and a win against #15 Northwestern Oklahoma State University, 91-71.

Junior guard Clifton Clarida wowed the crowd on Thursday night, twice. The first time, Clarida followed up a jump shot with a put back, jumping over everyone in his way for a dunk. Then, Clarida was on the receiving end of an alley-oop pass from Kris Hatley, getting the crowd even more fired up.

The Pioneers held the lead throughout most of the game, until USAO’s Keith Miller hit two 3-pointers in a row to put the Drovers up by four with 3:43 left in regulation. The Pioneers continued to fight, but could not overcome the Drovers down the stretch.

Three Pioneers scored in the double figures led by Nate Bridges with 15 points. DeJuan Davis put in 14, and Clarida added 11 to the score. Danny Storey pulled down 10 rebounds. Bridges also had four blocks and Kris Hatley dished out six assists.

Saturday’s game provided quite a different result. Northwestern Oklahoma was in second place in the conference going into the game, but the Pioneers proved to be at their best.

Hitting 14 shots from beyond the arch, the Pioneers outdid the Rangers of Northwestern. Davis hit six of those and had a game high 23 points. He was followed closely by Kendall Webb with 22 points. Bridges contributed 16 points and had a team high nine boards.

This split put the Pioneer conference record at 6-8 and moved them into sixth place in the SAC.

The next home game for the Pioneers will be Thursday, February 24 against St. Gregory’s University at 8 p.m. They will finish their regular season at home against Oklahoma City University on Saturday, February 26 at 3 p.m.
