Dean, School of Religion and Philosophy


The Assistant Professor of Religion will work under the direct supervision of the Dean of the School of Religion and Philosophy.  The Assistant Professor of Religion will work in close cooperation with the Director of the Virtual Campus.  As an employee of WBU, this individual will represent the University’s spiritual emphasis to the students, faculty, administration, staff, and the community in a manner consistent with the university’s mission and purpose.

1.  Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Religion and Philosophy through the Virtual Campus.  Some face-to-face and hybrid classes may also be assigned.

2.  Advise and counsel students in academic and professional matters.

3.  Serve on School, Faculty, and University committees.

4.  Provide services and information to area churches and to the community.

5.  Maintain positive relationships with local churches, students, faculty, administration, staff, and the general constituency of the University.

6.  Attend scheduled faculty and staff meetings and participate in graduations.

QUALIFICATIONS: A commitment of Christian Higher education and in agreement with the purposes and philosophy of Christian higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and Wayland Baptist University in particular.
Education, Certification and Licence:

1.  Earned Doctorate in the discipline required.

2.  Masters level seminary degree desired.

Experience & Knowledge:

1.  Preference given to applicants with recent successful educational experience or teaching at the college level.

2. Successful experience in online education and the use of teaching/learning technology is desired.

3.  Experience in advising students and managing degree plans is desired.

4.  Experience in local church staff ministry is desired.

Skills & Abilities:

1.  Must have high level of written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency with computer software, Blackboard, and other educational technology.

2. Must have ability to work collaboratively with University faculty, administration, staff, students, and local church personnel.

3.  Must be able to teach courses online through Wayland’s Virtual Campus.

4. Must be willing to invest time and effort in the development of students, School of Religion and Philosophy programs, and the University’s mission.

Additional Requirements:

1. Endorsement by the Executive Vice President/Provost.

2. Must be able to pass Background Checks.

3. Must have no delinquent or defaulted Student Loans on Credit Report.

4.  Must reside in Hale County, Texas, within one year of initial contract date.
