Campus Police Officer


The Security Officer is responsible for the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and property of the university. Works part-time, flexible schedule to include evenings and/or late night shifts as assigned.


1.  Performs all functions of campus security.

2.  Actively performs patrol of all campus property.

3.  Monitors and enforces University traffic and parking regulations.

4.  Interacts with local police and firefighters in the performance of official duties and as a means of creating favorable liaison.

5.  Reports safety and security issues to appropriate departments for resolution and follows up to ensure completion.

6.  Investigates and routinely reports all applicable shift activity to supervisor.

7.  Secures and maintains crime-scenes coordinating inter-departmental efforts to investigate criminal activity, collect evidence, identify witnesses or other parties and return the campus to a state of normal activity in a timely fashion.

8.  Responds to calls for police service or other incidents; apprehends law-breakers as necessary; conducts follow-up investigations; conducts surveillance of areas for suspected or potential criminal activity.

9.  Makes detentions, apprehensions and/or arrests when required in accordance with State law, departmental policy and practices of the department.

10.  Performs clerical tasks such as data entry, filing citations, reports, logs and other records as required.

11.  Maintains all TCLEOSE required training and seeks personal professional growth opportunities in acquiring/honing skills and knowledge.

12.  Consistently reports to work on time; attends regularly scheduled department meetings as directed.

13.  Maintains care and condition of all related University property.

14.  Responds to University related emergencies.

15.  Maintains compliance with the University’s Code of Conduct, the Law Enforcement Officer’s Oath of Honor and Principles of Policing as well as the policies of Wayland Baptist University.

16.  Performs all functions commensurate with the function of commissioned, armed peace officers with consideration to State and local law, departmental policy, generally accepted security practices, safety of the officer and the community, and Christian morals and ethics.

17.  Coordinates schedule with supervisor to ensure necessary security coverage.

18.   Communicates University policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, faculty,  and visitors.

19.  Monitors University facilities (e.g. grounds, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, lunch time activities, vehicle registration, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring crime.

20.  Prepares documentation (e.g. incident and activity reports, parking permits, tracking tickets, identification cards, referrals, schedules, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.

21.  Responds to emergency situations (e.g. fights, injury, classroom, etc.) for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns.

22.  Restrains individuals when necessary for the purpose of ensuring their own safety and the safety of others.

23.  Searches students, vehicles, etc. for the purpose of ensuring safety of students/personnel and referring to administration and/or law enforcement as required.

1.  A commitment to Christian higher education that integrates Christian faith with learning.

2.  Valid Texas Driver’s License.

3.  Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates issued in conformance with the American Red Cross recommendations and guidelines for CPR, First Aid, and emergency care.

Education, Certification and Licence: 1.  Valid and current Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) is a plus.

2.  High School Diploma required.

3.  Bachelors degree in Justice Administration or related field is highly desirable.

Experience & Knowledge:

Experience in a Texas law enforcement agency is highly desirable.

Skills & Abilities:

1.  Good physical condition.

2.  Ability to interact positively with students, faculty, staff and guests under all conditions and circumstances.

3.  Ability to think creatively about solutions to circumstances, disagreements, and disruptive behavior.

4.  Strong communications skills, both written and verbal.

Working Environment:

1.  Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.

2.  Generally the job requires 33% sitting, 34% walking, and 33% standing.

3.  The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in a generally hazard free environment.

Additional Requirements:

Must have no delinquent or defaulted items on Credit Report.  A credit check will be conducted to insure the requirement is met.
