RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Assistant Bookstore Manager prepares the bookstore/books/merchandise for the purpose of assisting/selling books and other merchandise.  Receives, stores, and issues books and other sales floor merchandise. Stocks shelves, racks, cases, bins, and tables with merchandise and arrange merchandise displays to attract customers. Routinely takes physical count of stock or check and mark merchandise.

SPECIFIC TASKS
AND DUTIES:

1.  Running a register and handling cash, credit cards, and other forms of payment.

2.  Provide customer service

3.  Answers questions and advises customers in selection of merchandise, in person and on the telephone.

4.  Count and prepare deposit, in times when bookstore manager is out.

5.  Checks, scans, labels, and enters information to the computer.

6.  Processes reports.

7.  Files copies and staples materials.

8.  Receives, opens, and unpacks cartons or crates of merchandise and checks invoice against items received.

9.  Clean and stocks storage areas and displays with new or transferred merchandise.

10.  Clean and sets up advertising signs and displays merchandise on shelves, counters, or tables to attract customers and promote sales.

11.  Takes inventory or examines merchandise to identify items to be reordered, replenished, or sent back to vendor for credit, due to overstock or defective merchandise.

12.  Stamps, attaches, or changes price tags on merchandise referring to price list.

13.  Requisitions merchandise from supplier based on available space, merchandise on hand, customer demand, or advertised specials.

14.  Arranges and cleans display cases, shelves, and aisles.

15.  Performs other related duties as required.

16.  Prepares books and other merchandise for shipping

17.  This job requires standing and work long hours during rush week.

18.  Performs bookstore manager duties in the absence of the bookstore manager.

QUALIFICATIONS: A commitment of Christian Higher education and in agreement with the purposes and philosophy of Christian higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and Wayland Baptist University in particular.
Education, Certification and Licence:

1.  High School Diploma or GED required with emphasis on office management/office skills desired.

2.  Associate or Bachelor’s degree in business or related skills desired.

Experience & Knowledge:

1.  Service Orientation - Actively looks for ways to help people.

2.  Social Perceptiveness - Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.

3.  Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

4.  Mathematics - Using mathematics to solve problems.

5.  Experience in retail, preferably in a bookstore operation.

6.  A deep commitment to Christian Higher Education and agreement with the purposes and philosophy of higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and WBU in particular. 

7.  An understanding of and commitment to work with educational programs related to churches, businesses, industries, and the military.

Skills & Abilities:

1.  Must possess good computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint experience.

2.  Must have the ability to gain a working knowledge of the University Power Campus program.

3.  Must possess good verbal and written skills plus good listening skills.

4.  Must be detail-oriented and have good organizational skills.

5.  Ability to be flexible, prioritize and available to work extended hours as needed.

6.  Ability to follow directions and work cooperatively with others.

Physical Demands:

1.  Ability to lift approximately forty pounds overhead.

2.  Stooping and bending.

3.  Standing for long periods of time.

4.  Transporting boxes.

5.  Physical dexterity and coordination.

Working Conditions:

7.  May require some travel to off-campus location.

8.  Incumbent is paid for a forty-hour week but works thirty-seven and one half hours.  The difference is the applicant is expected to work extended hours during registration and graduation.

Additional Requirements:

Must have no delinquent or defaulted Student Loans.  A credit check may be conducted to insure the requirement is met.
