Wayland plans Big Weekend college preview event
Wayland Baptist University will host its annual college preview event, Big Weekend, on March 22-23 for high school juniors, seniors or college transfer students.
With plenty of activities, a concert and audition opportunities, Big Weekend offers prospective students a chance to get an up-close look at college life and, specifically, life at Wayland.
The weekend begins with registration on Friday, March 22, beginning at noon. "Marsh Madness," featuring games and activities in the grassy area in the center of the campus, will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Campus tours will be given regularly during the afternoon, followed by dinner at 5:30 p.m.
Friday's big event is the 7:30 p.m. concert featuring Mercy Me, Ten Shekel Shirt and The Normals. Admission to the concert, held in Harral Auditorium, is free for Big Weekend participants and $10 per person for others.
Following the concert, the traditional Late Night Breakfast will be held, with serving and cooking by Wayland's own faculty. Other late night activities are planned from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.
Saturday's slate of activities begins with late registration and breakfast, both at 8 a.m., with a special breakfast for parents planned. From then on, information abounds as students attend "All About WBU" and learn more about the college application and financial aid process. An academic fair follows, with professors from each academic division on hand to discuss their programs and offerings.
Lunch follows, with an organization fair offered to show off opportunities for involvement outside the classroom. The afternoon features mock classes, and admissions and financial aid offices will be open for further information. The weekend wraps up with a praise service sponsored by Baptist Student Ministries from 6 - 7 p.m. following dinner.
During the weekend, a cheerleader workshop will be held, with one session on Friday evening before the concert and one on Saturday afternoon. Tryouts will also be available for cheerleaders as well as athletics including men's and women's JV basketball, women's soccer and volleyball and men's golf. Students may also register for auditions for choral, band, art and theatre scholarships.
Cost for the weekend for prospective students is $20, which includes all meals, lodging and tickets for events. Students will stay in dormitories with current Wayland students and will need to bring sleeping bags and toiletries.
Parents or sponsors may attend the weekend for $15, which includes their meals and event tickets. Lodging is available at special Big Weekend rates at local hotels.
Transportation can be arranged from the Lubbock airport or the Plainview bus station with prior notice.
