Martha Cross named new development director at Wayland

Long-time Plainview resident Martha Cross has been named the new Director of Development for Wayland Baptist University's Plainview campus, effective August 1.

Martha Cross In the position, Cross will be responsible for raising awareness and funds for the Plainview campus and its special projects. A major project she will assist in securing funds for the Pete and Nelda Laney Activity Center planned for the campus.

"I'm excited to have Martha as a part of the Wayland team. She'll be an excellent fundraiser for Wayland Baptist University," said Dr. Russ Gibbs, vice president for institutional advancement at Wayland. "She's an established member of this community and will be an outstanding addition to our fundraising efforts in Plainview and the South Plains area."

Gibbs said hiring Cross was the culmination of a year-long search for the right person to fill the position.

"I've looked for someone to fill this position for over a year and waited to hire someone until I found the perfect match for Wayland and this community. I believe that person is Martha Cross," he said.

"I love Plainview, Wayland and the students and I love working with people. In the past year, I've gotten an opportunity to work with the WMU Foundation, so that sparked my interest to pursue development and philanthropy," Cross said. "I hope to improve communication with faculty and staff, alumni and donors so they all feel like they have an important part in the success of Wayland."

Cross is a graduate of Plainview High School and holds the Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University. She has a Master's degree in Education from Wayland. After a brief stint in the classroom, Cross spent the last 12 years managing her husband Ricky's dentistry practice, handling the business and financial aspects.

She has been active in the First Baptist Church of Plainview, serving as Missions Education director, a member of the Missions Committee, a Bible Study leader and Women's Retreat coordinator. She is also a volunteer for the United Way, a member of the Plainview Symphony Board and sponsor for the Junior Symphony Guild, and was a former member of the Junior Service League and the Venture Club.

Much of Cross' fundraising experience comes through work with the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) and specifically with the WMU Foundation as its regional coordinator. In that capacity, Cross coordinated various events, lead charitable giving workshops, identified potential donors and was a spokesperson and liaison for endowments within the region.

Cross is a member of the Texas WMU Executive Board, is a conference leader with the Texas Leadership Conference, is an advisory board member for the Christian Women's Job Corps and is the associational WMU director.

She and her husband have two daughters, Lyndsay, 12, and Morgan, 8.
