Brisco offers certainties to WBU grads

Wayland graduates Jeremy Harris (left) and Celina Vasquez (right) celebrate with Katy Butler after commencement activities Saturday afternoon at Harral Memorial Auditorium.PLAINVIEW - Wayland Baptist University held its 2004 Spring Commencement ceremony Saturday afternoon at Harral Memorial Auditorium. In all, 75 students participated in the event.

Dr. Thomas V. Brisco, Dean of the Logsdon School of Theology at Hardin-Simmons University, urged graduates to take with them three certainties found in Psalms 8: They live in a God-centered universe, God knows them by name and He has prepared a purpose for their lives.

"God trusts you and He has entrusted you," Brisco said. "Without you, there would be something missing."

Brisco, an archeologist, told the graduates that he has been amazed at the amount of change in the world just within their lifetime. He said we live in a world full of uncertainty and conflict.

"But through it all, I pray there will be three certainties you take with you," Brisco said. "God holds us safely in a world that is His, He knows us and He trusts us."

Senior class speaker Chris Currah challenged his classmates to do three things: recognize their potential, set goals and don't be afraid to fail.

"If you shoot for the stars and hit the moon, at least you hit something," Currah said.

Elisabeth Good of Pharr and Martha Ann Trull of Crosbyton were recognized as the highest ranking seniors. Each graduated Summa Cum Laude, maintaining a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

Good, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and religion, also completed the honors program, writing and defending a thesis titled "Evaluating the Construct Validity of Subjective Tests of Visual Imagery: Considering Self-Perception and Social Desirability Factors."

Trull graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting.

Dr. Don Cook and Dr. Phillip Almes, both of whom retired at the end of the semester, were presented as emeritus professors. Cook, who began teaching at Wayland in 1964, was named Emeritus Professor of English. Almes, who spent the last 20 years teaching for Wayland, was named Emeritus Professor of Mathematics.
