Alumni events on tap featuring baseball, dessert and theatre

Release Date:June 6, 2007

PLAINVIEW – Three events have been planned for alumni and friends of Wayland Baptist University for the coming weeks, aimed at providing entertaining getaways and chances to fellowship.

The first hits June 12 in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention in San Antonio, when WBU will host a Texas-sized dessert bar reception at 9 p.m. following the Tuesday night session of the convention. The reception will be at the Marriott Rivercenter located just across from the convention center and is free for WBU alums, friends and guests.

The second event, planned for Friday, June 15, is an outing to the Amarillo Dillas game against Edinburg at the Dilla Villa, located adjacent to Dick Bivins Stadium on East Third Street. The evening begins with a meal served from 6:05 p.m. to 7 p.m., featuring an all-you-can-eat barbecue buffet of brisket, smoked sausage, potato salad, cole slaw and beans. Then the Dillas take the field at 7:05, including former Pioneer baseballers Jonathan Reynoso, Taylor Allen and Mike Irby.

The WBU group will have the opportunity to get autographs from the team mascot and several players after the game and will be announced as a visiting group. The group will also have door prize drawings as well as time to fellowship during the meal.

Cost for the outing is $15 for adults (includes the meal and the game ticket) and $10 for children. Contact Danny Andrews at (806) 291-3603 by June 13 to reserve your tickets. Payment will be made at the gate.

The final event in June will be a weekend getaway to Ruidoso, N.M., culminating in the performance of Shadowlands by the Wayland theatre department at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the majestic Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts. The weekend officially begins with a free Saturday morning brunch at First Baptist Church, followed by a golf scramble for interested persons ($105 charge) or afternoon free time for shopping, hiking or relaxing. The theatre show, a drama about the life and love of Christian author C.S. Lewis, will round out the day. Sunday morning the WBU group will gather for worship at First Baptist Church.

Tickets for the theatre production are $30, which includes a reception afterward for the cast and Wayland guests. Lodging reservations and transportation to Ruidoso should be booked by the travelers. Golf and theatre reservations must be made by June 15 with payment due at the time of reservation.

For information or to reserve space for the Ruidoso weekend or other alumni events, contact Andrews at 291-3603 or by email at andrewsd@wbu.edu.
