Wayland honors donors at first recognition dinner

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University honored some of its most significant donors and friends at the first Evening with the President recognition dinner held Saturday night at the Plainview Country Club, hosted by Wayland President Dr. Paul Armes and his wife Duanea.

The event honored those who gave at a certain level during the 2013 calendar year as well as donors whose gifts place them in a lifetime giving level, with the entry point at $50,000 in cumulative giving. A special reception before the dinner was set aside for those in the President’s Circle, donors who gave at least $1,000 to the Annual Fund, undesignated gifts which help fund institutional scholarships, provide for technology upgrades and needed repairs around the Wayland system. In its inaugural year, the President’s Circle had around 50 members.

After musical entertainment by Wayland junior Megan Robinett of Lubbock, a junior choral music education major, junior Tigo Cruz of Plainview shared a few words of thanks on behalf of Wayland students as a recipient of the Plainview Educational Partnership fund and endowed scholarships that have helped fund his degree in recreation and camp management.

Tigo Cruz“Paying for an education is a challenge,” Cruz said. “But with gifts from generous people like you, Wayland students get to reap the benefits of your generosity and, like me, other students are able to achieve our dreams and follow the path God has set out before us.”
The highlight of the evening was the honoring of two very special longtime donors to the university, who were presented the first-ever President’s Awards, designed to honor donors who have given significantly to the life of the university over an extended period of time, showing the highest support and loyalty for Wayland’s mission and advancement. The 2014 recipients were Harley and Wilda Redin, longtime Plainview residents, and Sally Shaw, who farmed with her late husband Kelton for many years in Lockney and now lives in Dallas.

Harley and Wilda Redin with President ArmesThe Redins first made an impact on Wayland separately – he as longtime coach of the historic Flying Queens basketball team, and she as one-half of the Hutchersons who flew the players to many games. After both of their spouses died, Wilda married Coach Redin, creating a joint legacy that has not been equaled on the campus. The gymnasium at Wayland bears the Hutcherson name outside and the Redins’ names on the court, the Athletic Hall of Honor bears Harley Redin’s name, and the two have helped support scholarships, building projects and many other campaigns as well.

Sally Shaw and President Armes“Their love for this university has surpassed anything imaginable, and their unwavering support will be a beacon for others to emulate,” said Dr. Armes in presenting the award.
Mrs. Shaw has supported every initiative at Wayland over the past several decades and has served on the Board of Trustees, and she has left a mark on the university that will impact students for eternity. From building funds to scholarships to special campaigns, the Shaws are some of Wayland’s most generous, humble and passionate supporters.
“Sally Shaw is at the top of the list when the word philanthropy is mentioned at Wayland,” said Dr. Armes when presenting the award. “She has given unselfishly of her time and resources to advance the mission of Wayland.”

In addition to these honors, Dr. Armes presented six donors with the Keeper of the Flame, a crystal award recognizing donors who reach the $100,000 mark in lifetime giving. Brief remarks were used to introduce each recipient as follows:

  • Dr. L. S. Foreman, a retired physician from Tulia, who with this late wife Barbara are longtime supporters. Foreman served on the WBU Board of Trustees and the couple established several scholarships. They have also supported the School of Music, driven by their own love for music.
  • Longtime Plainview residents, Max and Marcheta Gabriel were a familiar face as business owners in the city, and they have supported Wayland for many years. Max served on the WBU Board, and the pair established several scholarships, supported others and provided the beautiful stained-glass windows in the Mabee Learning Resources Center chapel.
  • Perryton residents Bruce and Jolene Julian are among some of the most faithful and generous supporters of undesignated giving at Wayland, among many other projects they fund. A longtime and current member of the Wayland Board, Bruce is retired from law and banking careers.
  • With a long and deep love for missions, Ben and Bertha Mieth of Glen Rose established an endowed chair in missions for the School of Religion and Philosophy at Wayland and have supported other scholarships as well. The couple helped found International Commission in 1973 along with their former pastor, Rev. Gene Hawkins, also a WBU Board member.
  • Longtime Lubbock residents Mark and Linda Murdock have supported Wayland generously, though they hold degrees from another Baptist school. Retired from the food brokerage business, Mark has served on the board for many years. The couple has established several scholarship and given to every area of need at Wayland.
  • Robert and Sally Walker of Arlington are true Wayland family. Sally began with a degree at Wayland in 1981 and was recently installed as the first female chairperson of the Wayland board. The couple are tireless recruiters and benefactors and have scholarships to honor family members. They own and operate Blue Star Electric Company and Acme Electric.
