Sweeney joins Wayland faculty in Division of Social Sciences

Dr. Kevin SweeneyDr. Kevin Sweeney of Oklahoma has joined the Wayland Baptist University in the Division of Social Sciences. Sweeney will teach geography as an assistant professor of social sciences.

Sweeney comes to Wayland from Oklahoma State University, where he served as graduate teaching associate in the Department of History while working toward his doctorate. He also served as an instructor for lower-level history courses and as a teaching assistant in several history courses.

He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma, a master of arts from Northwestern Oklahoma State University and a doctorate from OSU. He is a member of the Western Historical Society, the American Society for Environmental History and Phi Alpha Theta history honor society.

Sweeney has presented at several conferences, with topics including the Great American Desert and Indian Tribes in the Southern Plains. He has also had several reviews published in Chronicles of Oklahoma.

Dr. Estelle Owens, chairperson for the Division of Social Sciences, said Sweeney fits in wonderfully in the division because of his specializations.

"What's wonderful from our perspective is that he is both a historian and a geographer. That combination is unusual, even rare," Owens said. "He has a background none of us does, because he's a western and an environmental historian. We didn't have anyone who could do that. He's also a genuinely good person and a likeable person."
