Big Weekend scheduled for March 21-22

PLAINVIEW - Wayland Baptist University will host Big Weekend, a college for any high school junior or senior, or college transfer student. Scheduled for March 21-22, the weekend is for those who want to experience college life at Wayland.

"(Big Weekend) allows them to see first hand what Wayland has to offer," said WBU Director of Admissions Shawn Thomas.

Students will participate in special events where they get to know some of the University's students, faculty and staff. They will be offered mock classes, financial aid seminars and admissions counseling.

"Essentially, they are a Wayland student for a weekend," Thomas said.

Students will have the opportunity to attend baseball games, take campus tours, sleep in the dorms, eat in the cafeteria, try out for various athletic teams and take part in voice, theatre and band auditions for scholarships.

A Friday night concert featuring Switchfoot will highlight the weekend. Switchfoot may be most noted for its work on the soundtrack to "A Walk to Remember." Five of the band's songs were used in making the film. The concert will also feature Noise Rachet and Denison Mars.

The weekend will be capped with a Baptist Student Ministries led worship service at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The cost is $20 per student and $15 per sponsor for the full weekend with an optional $8 T-shirt. Meals are included in the registration fee. Students must bring sleeping bags and all personal items, including those things needed for tryouts and auditions. Students will stay in the dorms, while sponsors and parents can take advantage of special rates available at select Plainview hotels.

The concert is open to the public and costs $10 for those not participating in Big Weekend. Tickets are available at the Wayland bookstore; at Mardel, Family Christian Store and Lifeway Store in Lubbock; at High Plains Religious Bookstore and Family Christian Store in Amarillo; and at The Master's Books and Gifts in Clovis, N.M.
