Exhibit features award-winning watercolor pieces

PLAINVIEW - Award winners from the 53 rd Annual Exhibition of the Texas Watercolor Society will be on display in the Abraham Art Gallery on the campus of Wayland Baptist University through March 21.

The show features "Grandma Loved Byron Florin," the Best of Show Award winner by Carol Clarkson Howell of Lubbock Other panhandle winners include Gale Webb of Lubbock, who earned the HK Holbein, Inc. Merchandise Award for her watercolor titled "Blue Jeans, Blue Hat;" and Nancy Carr of Levelland, who earned an honorable mention for "Sunflower Delight," a watercolor and gouache piece.

Louise Cadillac, juror for the exhibition, said she depended on the artists to help her choose winning pieces.

"I was guided by the initiative of the artist in stating a personal view, projecting fresh vision or insight, and by the innovative means by which he/she attempted to convey their thoughts," Cadillac said. "Especially encouraging is to see the wide range of ideas and styles proliferating in today's watermedia painting community. A sense of energy, urgency and optimism mark this refreshing new attitude among today's painters."

According to Dr. Candace Keller, curator of the Abraham Gallery and associate professor of art at Wayland, the Texas Watercolor Society competition began as a Texan exhibition and has grown to an important national display of watercolor painting. The Abraham Gallery is one of only six Texas galleries and museums selected to present the display and the works selected represent a wide variety of content, subject matter, techniques and styles in watermedia.

Associate membership in TWS is open to watercolor artists, and signature membership is achieved by having a total of three paintings accepted by jurors of the annual exhibitions.

The TWS exhibit will be open to the public through March 7 during regular hours of the Mabee Learning Resources Center, which houses the Abraham Gallery. The gallery will also be open March 10 -13 during Wayland's spring break and will reopen March 17, continuing through March 21. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
