Betty DonaldsonPLAINVIEW -- Wayland Baptist University named alum Betty Donaldson as the new Vice President for Institutional Advancement for the Wayland system. Donaldson will begin her duties April 15 on the Plainview campus.

A 1969 WBU graduate and a native of Wellington, Donaldson played for the Flying Queens on an athletic scholarship. She also earned a master's degree in education administration from Wayland in 1989.

Donaldson comes to the Wayland position from a role as vice president of Learning Bridges Educational Company, based in Arizona. She has many years of experience in public education, having served also as associate superintendent for administrative services in the Scottsdale (Ariz.) Unified School District and in the Allen (Texas) Independent School District and as assistant superintendent for administrative services for the Frenship (Texas) Independent School District.

Donaldson began her career in education as an assistant basketball coach and physical education teacher at Frenship High School, eventually serving as assistant high school principal and principal at Frenship Intermediate School before moving into district administration.

While in administration at Frenship, Donaldson led an effort to gain a grant from the Texas Education Agency that resulted in more than $1 million for the district, used exclusively to serve at-risk students in the district.

During her tenure in various school districts, Donaldson's schools earned Exemplary and Mentor School designations and she earned Mentor Principal and Educator of the Year honors as well. She received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Wayland at homecoming in 2003.

In her role as VP for advancement at Wayland, Donaldson will oversee the development/fundraising of the university as well as the alumni services and communications/public relations offices.

"We are thrilled to have Betty Donaldson as the newest member of our President's Cabinet," said WBU President Dr. Paul Armes. "Her experience in public school administration, her knowledge of philanthropic dynamics and her history as an alumnus and a member of the Flying Queens basketball team will serve her well in her new responsibilities. We believe she will do an excellent job as Vice President of Institutional Advancement."

Donaldson and her husband Larry, also a 1969 Wayland graduate, have two sons and daughters-in-law - Joe and Kristi Donaldson and Jay and Whitney Donaldson - and two grandchildren, Jolie and Larry Joe Donaldson.
