Groundbreaking set for new Laney Activities Center

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University will hold the official groundbreaking for the Pete and Nelda Laney Student Activities Center on Monday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. at the building site, located at the intersection of Utica and Eighth Streets.

The brief ceremony will feature a benediction by Vernon Stokes, chairman of the board of trustees, an introduction by Dr. Paul Armes and a response by Mr. Laney, a state representative from Hale Center. University officials and the Laneys will be taking part in the official breaking of ground. A reception will follow immediately in the atrium of the Mabee Learning Resources Center.

The 50,000-square foot facility will be built by Mill-Hicks of Lubbock at a total cost not to exceed $5 million. Initially planned to be a three-phase construction project, the center will now be done in one phase and will include a double gymnasium, an indoor, elevated running track, a weight room and aerobics area, classrooms, a student lounge and snack bar area and a climbing wall.

The Laney Center is expected to be the most significant student life enhancement project on the Plainview campus since the completion of the Mabee LRC in 1996.  The facility will provide much needed fitness and recreation space for students and intramural sports. Hutcherson Center will remain the primary location for Wayland’s athletic teams, training room and athletic offices.

Construction is expected to be completed by the beginning of the Fall 2006 semester.
