Community Classroom releases slate of classes for fall term

PLAINVIEW – The Community Classroom of Wayland Baptist University has announced its class lineup for the early fall term, including several computer certification courses designed to increase job skills.

“According to the Texas Workforce Commission, jobs involving computers, specifically systems analysts, support technicians, network administrators and Internet development specialists, are among the top five occupations in great demand in this area,” said Debbie Stennett, director of Community Classroom.

To meet that demand, the facility is offering two programs aimed at training individuals for those jobs. One is the CompTia A+ Operating System Certification program, a two-part program culminating in certification for individuals to maintain and repair personal computers. The first half, dealing with hardware components, was held this summer and the second half is planned for the fall term.

Open to those age 16 and over, the class will meet at Wayland’s Lubbock campus on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Aug. 26 through Sept. 30. The course costs $600 and includes the textbook and fee for the certification exam which follows the classwork. Interested participants should be familiar with a computer and keyboard mouse as well as the Windows XP operating system. Registration ends August 23.

A Linux + Professional Certification course is also offered, aimed at providing skills and knowledge to work on the Unix command line, performing maintenance tasks, and installing and configuring workstations and connecting to the LAN or stand-alone PC. Certification is completed by passing a test following the course.

The class will also be taught at the Lubbock campus on Saturdays, from Oct. 7 through Nov. 4. Cost is $600 which includes textbook and cost of the exam taken after the class. The class is open to students grade 10 and above as well as adults. Registration ends Oct. 2.
