PLAINVIEW – The Wayland Baptist University Division of Fine Arts will present a special opera and musical theatre performance at 7:30 p.m. April 24 and 25 in the Miller Recital Hall in Harral Memorial Auditorium.
The show will feature four Wayland students performing various, recognizable scenes from both opera and musical theatre. Brandon Basham, Alicia Alford, Aile Tedsen and Rachel Morgan will perform the scenes with full costumes and props.
The performance will include a couple of Mozart scenes from A Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro. They will also perform “Somewhere That’s Green” from Little Shop of Horrors, the “Crossword Puzzle Song” from Starting Here, Starting There, the “Matchmaker Trio” from Fiddler on the Roof, “C’est Moi” from Camelot, “Laurie’s Aria” from The Tenderland and the opening scene from Hansel and Gretel.
“What’s fun about this performance is that it gives you a little bit of everything,” said Jeff Kensmoe, director of vocal studies and opera/musical theatre at Wayland. “It’s fun and excitement from opera and musical theatre. We tried to find a lot of fun things that people enjoy. There is a little bit of seriousness, but not too much.”
Kensmoe said people will recognize most of the songs and scenes.
“Even Hansel and Gretel,” he said. “Although it is an opera by Englebert Humperdinck, the original Englebert Humperdinck, not the pop singer from 1960s or whenever, people will recognize the prayer and the little folk song that is mixed in there.”
Admission to the performance is free and open to the public.
