Board approves emeritus status for retired alumni director

PLAINVIEW – The Board of Trustees at Wayland Baptist University approved an honor for a recently retired longtime employee by conferring emeritus status on Joe Provence during their fall meeting on Oct. 26.

Provence retired in June after a 40-year career with Wayland, beginning in the public relations office and ending with a 21-year stint as Director of Alumni Services. He has remained on board with Wayland part time as alumni associate, working with alumni contacts. The position of director was reformatted as Director of Alumni Development, with Danny Andrews filling that role in July.

A native of Arlington, Provence came to WBU in 1957 as a student, leaving in 1959 to attend to an ill brother. He returned in 1962 to complete his education and to work as news service director, earning his degree in 1966.

He then worked as director of recruitment and promotion and later as student activities director and cheerleader sponsor before taking the alumni position in 1985. He and wife Freda, employed in the president’s office at Wayland, are longtime supporters of the university and have been generous with their time attending many school events, and their money, giving to numerous causes over the decades.

Emeritus status is awarded by recommendation of the division in honor of individuals who have served the university with distinction for a period of time. Benefits of the title are primarily honorary and denote a desire by the university to have a continued relationship with the honoree.

Provence’s title will now be Emeritus Director of Alumni Services.
