Wayland food service provider collecting cans for FISH, world record
PLAINVIEW – Sodexho, the food service provider for Wayland Baptist University, is soliciting the help of students, staff and other community visitors to help them reach a two-fold goal.
The company is attempting to break a Guinness World Record for the most canned food donations in a single event nationwide, with Sodexho branches on campuses across the U.S. participating. In Plainview, the collected cans will be donated to Faith in Sharing House, a local nonprofit pantry that provides food for the needy.
The official date for the collection, called Cans Across America, is Oct. 18, but according to Charles Carlile, general manager for Sodexho at Wayland, supporters may begin bringing canned foods to the cafeteria at any time before that date.
“We have set up boxes at the cafeteria for folks to bring by donations, and we’ll have boxes in each of the dorms as well,” Carlile said. “The dorm that collects the most pounds of food will get a pizza party.”
Carlile said he hopes community visitors who patronize the cafeteria, especially during the Sunday brunch time, will participate in the collection effort as well. On the 18th, all food collected will be weighed and logged in – a can at a time – and photographs of the entire event must be taken as proof toward the world record.
The dining hall at Wayland is located in the McClung University Center, 7th and Smythe, on the campus.
