PLAINVIEW – When August rolls in, thoughts always turn toward the beginning of a new school year. For Wayland Baptist University things are no different as faculty, staff and administration gear up for the students’ return to campus.

Sponsored by the Office of Student Activities, Koinonia 2013 is being held Aug. 16-19. The theme of this year’s student orientation is iConnect, helping new students to find their place on campus and connect to the greater Wayland community through history and tradition.

“The tradition has always been here, but every year it takes on a new face,” said Micah Evans, Director of Student Activities at Wayland. “These students are the new faces of tradition. We are expecting a great class of students, and we are looking for excellence all the way around form athletics to academics.”

As of Friday, 160 new students had signed up to participate in the orientation weekend with registrations continuing to come in. Students will move in beginning Friday morning. Activities start at 10 a.m. with Mayhem in the Marsh. This is a time of fun and games among students while late registration for the event continues on campus. Lunch consists of a cookout for faculty, staff and students.

Following lunch, Koinonia activities kick into high gear as students are divided into K-families where they connect with other new students. The program content for the weekend includes fun and games, as well as times of worship and introductions to Wayland traditions and information. There are also separate activities for students’ parents who choose to stay and connect with other parents of new students.

Koinonia, the Greek term for fellowship, is designed to help make students feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Upperclassmen play a key role in leading the K-families and interacting with new students. Activities will culminate Monday night with a dance on the concrete prairie. Final registration for the fall term will be held on Tuesday afternoon with classes beginning on Wednesday.
