PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University held a special reception in the School of Business Friday morning to officially recognize outgoing Dean Dr. Otto B. Schacht and incoming Dean Dr. Barry Evans.

Dr. Schacht is stepping down as Dean of the School of Business, a position he has held since 2002. Schacht has been professor of business since joining Wayland in 1999. He will return to the classroom fulltime with plans to retire in a couple of years.

Dr. Barry Evans, who has been with Wayland since 2011, will take over as Dean of the School.

Fellow faculty and staff members gathered in the hall of the Nunn Business Building on Friday to celebrate the transition. Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Bobby Hall addressed the group with words for Dr. Schacht’s wife, Madonna.

“I told Dr. Schacht that I have fought a good fight for a number of years to get him to remain as the Dean, but eventually Madonna won,” Hall said. “I throw in the towel, Madonna, you beat me.”

All kidding aside, Hall said it was a privilege to have worked with Dr. Schacht over the years and he looks forward to working the Dr. Evans in the leadership role.

“We are just thrilled to be able to honor both Dr. Schacht and Dr. Evans and the good news story in all of this is that neither one of them is going anywhere,” Hall said. “I think that all of us understand the vast contribution that Otto has made to our institution. The growth of the school of business under his watch has been phenomenal.

“We are also really, really blessed to have a guy like Barry Evans for this role. I think without question, God put him here for this purpose, just like He put Otto here for this purpose some years ago,” Hall said.

Evans takes over just as the School of Business prepares to roll out its doctoral programs. The School plans to begin offering a Ph.D. in business administration as well as a Doctor of Management degree in the fall of 2015, pending final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Along with Dr. Evans promotion to dean, Dr. Charles Starnes will serves as Associate Dean for Master’s Programs, Dr. Shelley Tapp will remain the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, and Dr. Kelly Warren will serve as Associate Dean for Doctoral Programs.
